The star-formation history of the Milky Way Galaxy
The star-formation histories of the main stellar components of the Milky Way constrain critical aspects of galaxy formation and evolution. I discuss recent determinations of such histories, together with their interpretation in terms of theories of disk galaxy evolution.
متن کاملThe Star Formation History of the Milky Way
Quantification of the Galaxy’s star formation history involves both the duration and the rate of formation, with these parameters being known with different precision for different populations. The early rate of star formation is knowable from modelling chemical element data, the recent rate directly from isochrone analyses of colour-magnitude data. The field halo and globular clusters are almo...
متن کاملAn Intermittent Star Formation History in a "Normal" Disk Galaxy: The Milky Way.
The star formation rate history of the Milky Way is derived using the chromospheric age distribution for 552 stars in the solar neighborhood. The stars' sample birth sites are distributed over a very large range of distances because of orbital diffusion and so give an estimate of the global star formation rate history. The derivation incorporates the metallicity dependence of chromospheric emis...
متن کاملGalaxy Formation: Clues from the Milky Way
Stellar Populations are the fossil record of Galactic evolution. Interpretation of this record in the Local Group allows one to determine reliably the dominant physics controlling the evolution of those galaxies which are typical of the luminosity in the Universe, and is an essential prerequisite to understanding necessarily limited data at high redshifts. In our Galaxy, the key issues are the ...
متن کاملChemical enrichment and star formation in the Milky Way disk II . Star formation history
A chromospheric age distribution of 552 latetype dwarfs is transformed into a star formation history by the application of scale height corrections, stellar evolutionary corrections and volume corrections. We show that the disk of our Galaxy has experienced enhanced episodes of star formation at 0-1 Gyr, 2-5 Gyr and 7-9 Gyr ago, although the reality of the latter burst is still uncertain. The s...
